What Is The Triac Dimmer, LED 0-10v Dimming, PWM Dimming

What Is Dimming?

Dimming is through the dimmer to adjust luminous flux and illuminating level in the lighting device. Nowadays, there are many dimming drivers for different dimming ways used, such like the Triac dimmer, LED 0/1-10v dimmer, and PWM dimmer. All of their dimming methods is though controlling the output of current, voltage, and frequency magnitude to adjust the brightness. In the following. We will show how they operate by using the method.

What Is The Difference Between Triac Dimming, PWM Dimming, And 0-10v Dimming

LED 0/1-10v Dimming

0-10v dimming also called 0-10v signal dimming, is an analog dimming method that adds two port of +10v and - 10v on the driver differ from the Triac dimmer. It makes a dimming purpose via adjusting 1-10v voltage to control the current output from the driver. 0V is off, and 10v is the most brightness. When the resistance dimmer is set to a minimum of 1V, the output current is 10%, and if the output current is 100% at 10V, the brightness will also be 100. It is worth noting and best distinguished, 1-10V does not have an on/off function and cannot turn the luminaire to its minimum off function, whereas 0-10V has an on/off function. 1-10V does not have an on/off function and cannot turn the luminaire to its minimum off function, whereas 0-10V has an on/off function.

Triac Dimming

Triac dimming has been used in incandescent lamps and energy-saving lamps for a long time, at present, it is also the most widely used dimming method for LED dimming. Triac dimming is a physical dimming, starting from AC phase 0, the input voltage is chopped, and there is no voltage input until the Triac driver is turned on. Its working principle is to generate a tangential output voltage waveform after the input voltage waveform is cut through the conduction angle. By applying the principle of tangential direction, the effective value of the output voltage can be reduced, thereby reducing the power of the common load (resistive load). The Triac dimmer has the advantages of high adjustment accuracy, high efficiency, small size, lightweight, and easy long-distance manipulation, and is dominant in the market. The advantages of Triac dimming are high working efficiency, stable performance, and low dimming cost.

PWM Dimming

Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is a very effective technique for controlling analog circuits using the digital output of a microprocessor, and is widely used in many fields, from measurement and communications to power control and conversion and LED lighting. By controlling analog circuits digitally, the cost and power consumption of the system can be greatly reduced. In addition, many micro-controllers and DSPs already include a PWM controller on-chip, which makes digital control easier to implement.

Simply put, PWM is a method of digitally encoding the level of an analog signal. Through the use of high-resolution counters, the duty cycle of the square wave is modulated to encode the level of a specific analog signal. The PWM signal is still digital because at any given moment, the full-scale DC supply is either completely present or completely absent. A voltage or current source is applied to the analog load in a repetitive sequence of on or off pulses. When it is on, it is when the DC power supply is added to the load, and when it is off, it is when the power supply is disconnected.

Any analog value can be encoded using PWM as long as the bandwidth is sufficient. The diagram above shows three different PWM signals.

How To Choose The Best One For Your Place?

Before choosing the LDE driver, we should clearly recognize the ways of  wired dimming and wireless dimming. There are five wired dimming way include Traic Dimming, 0/1-10v dimming, DALI dimming, PWM dimming and DMX dimming. And there are four wireless dimming ways include Bluetooth, WIFI, Zigbee, and Z-wave.

Generally speaking, choosing the drivers are according to the actual demand and budget, no matter which one with lamps best matching is the best one.
