Understanding UGR(Unified Glare Rating) In Lighting

The rapid development of LED industry not only leads to the rapid improvement of LED luminous efficiency, but also makes the utilization rate of LED universal to every family. Because LED lamps are more likely to cause dazzle problems, the quality requirements of LED lamps will be higher.

# What is the Unified Glare Rating?

Firstly, Glare is a visual sensation caused by excessive and uncontrolled brightness. In simpler words, UGR predicts the amount of discomfortcausing glare produced by a lighting installation for a fixed set of conditions. Discomfort glare can result in annoyance, headaches or eyestrain.

Glare can be divided into two categories based on the visual impact on the human eye: disabling glare and uncomfortable glare. For different lighting environments, not only the glare evaluation methods are different, but also the evaluation standards are different at home and abroad.

# What is a reasonable index for UGR

Studies have found that people who live and work in light polluted environment for a long time will suffer different degrees of damage to the retina and iris, and their vision will decline sharply. The incidence of cataract is as high as 45%. Over 60% of high school students in china are myopic, partly due to the habit of using their eyes, but also due to the pollution of the visual environment.

Different UGR corresponds to different sensitivities

UGR

Sense of value

28

Intolerable value

25

Uncomfortable value

22

Just uncomfortable value

19

Comfort and discomfort threshold value

16

Just comfort value

13

Just felt the value of the glare

10

No glare sensitivities

In conclusion, UGR should be less than 19 index is better.

So 19 is the critical value of the glare index. When the value exceeds the estimated value, it can be determined that the design structure of the lamp is unreasonable. The smaller the glare value is, the smaller the glare harm is. however, there are only a small handful of UGR<19 linear luminaires available at present that provide the continuous stripe of lightvisual effect desired and are reasonably priced. Many of them have a low lumen output and provide poor uniformity which means more luminaires are needed to light the space and cost are driven up.
